Measure Disc Golf Throwing Speed and Improve Your Technique
In disc golf, throwing speed is an important factor influencing distance. Together with spin, release angle, and disc stability, it affects how your disc flies through the air.
With the Smart Coach Pocket Radar for disc golf, you can measure your backhand and forehand throwing speeds and compare different throwing techniques.
Discover how your run-up, body rotation, and timing affect your release speed. The radar is also an excellent training tool when practicing with a disc golf throwing net, allowing you to perform consistent, repeatable measurements.
Popular disc golf training applications include:
- Comparing backhand and forehand throwing speeds
- Measuring the effects of different run-up techniques
- Monitoring speed changes when adjusting your throwing mechanics
- Tracking throwing speed improvements over multiple training sessions
- Comparing throwing technique with recorded video footage
- Running speed measurement sessions during club practices and coaching workshops
Get Even More Throwing Data with TechDisc
Want to analyze more than just throwing speed? If you’re interested in additional metrics such as spin rate, launch angle, and nose angle, the TechDisc for disc golf is an excellent alternative or complementary training tool.
While the Smart Coach Pocket Radar is designed for versatile speed measurement across multiple sports, TechDisc has been specifically developed for detailed disc golf throw analysis. It provides additional data about your throwing mechanics, helping you better understand your technique.
For more information about the technology and available features, visit the official TechDisc website.
Both training devices offer different ways to make your disc golf practice more measurable, structured, and effective.
One Speed Radar Gun for Many Different Sports
The Smart Coach Pocket Radar is much more than a disc golf training device. Wherever balls or other suitable sports objects move at high speeds, measuring their velocity can provide valuable feedback.
Baseball and Softball
Measure pitching speeds and track your progress during throwing practice. For players, coaches, and clubs, consistent speed measurements are a valuable addition to technical training and performance analysis.
Tennis and Badminton
How fast is your tennis serve or badminton smash? With a suitable measurement setup, you can record speeds and compare different hitting techniques. In badminton, correct radar positioning and appropriate measurement conditions are particularly important because of the shuttlecock’s unique flight characteristics.
Soccer and Volleyball
The radar can also be used for training analysis in soccer and volleyball. Measure the speed of a soccer shot, volleyball serve, or attacking spike under suitable conditions.
Compare different techniques and monitor your progress across training sessions.
Other and Less Common Sports
The Pocket Radar is also an interesting training tool for less common sports and specialized training activities. Whether you’re measuring throwing, striking, or shooting movements, the radar offers a wide range of potential applications.
Measurement performance depends on the object’s speed, radar alignment, and environmental conditions. Not every sport or movement can be measured equally reliably under all circumstances.
Video Analysis with the Pocket Radar App
One of the standout features of the Smart Coach Pocket Radar is its Bluetooth connection to a compatible app. This allows you to combine speed measurements with video recordings for a more detailed analysis of your technique.
During video recording, the app can automatically create a clip covering approximately six seconds before and two seconds after a measurement. The recorded speed is displayed directly in the video.
This makes it easy to review your movements alongside the measured results. For example, you can compare two disc golf throws and see which technique generated greater speed.
For coaches, sports clubs, and dedicated athletes, this is a practical way to document training sessions and track performance improvements over time.
Auto Stop and Continuous Modes – Choose the Right Measurement Mode
Auto Stop – Individual Speed Measurements
In Auto Stop mode, the measurement is restarted for each attempt. This is particularly useful for individual throws or shots and can help reduce power consumption.
Continuous – Measure Multiple Attempts
In Continuous mode, the radar measures repeatedly without requiring you to manually trigger each measurement. This is ideal for consecutive throws, shots, or training sessions involving multiple athletes.
Results can be displayed in the app and announced through audio feedback, so you receive immediate information without returning to the radar after every attempt.
How to Get Reliable Speed Measurements
For the most accurate results, position the Pocket Radar as closely as possible along the direction of the moving ball or object.
The radar measures the component of velocity directed toward or away from the device. If positioned at a significant angle to the object’s path, the displayed speed may be lower than its actual speed.
For consistent training results, we recommend:
- Aligning the radar as closely as possible with the throwing or flight direction.
- Using the same measurement setup when comparing results.
- Taking multiple measurements rather than relying on a single maximum speed.
- Using a suitable throwing net for controlled disc golf practice when appropriate.
- Positioning the device safely outside the path of moving sports equipment.
When tracking progress, a consistent measurement setup is often more valuable than a single record-breaking result.
Double Mount – Convenient for Regular Training
At Discgolf4you, the Smart Coach Pocket Radar comes with the Double Mount.
This practical accessory allows you to position the radar on a suitable mounting setup, eliminating the need to hold it throughout your training session.
It’s especially useful when practicing alone, performing multiple measurements in a row, or recording video analysis.
A fixed radar position also helps maintain consistent measurement conditions when comparing throws or shots.
